Columbia was one of the first planned cities, with the capitol building located at Senate & Assembly Streets. The South Carolina College, known today as the University of South Carolina, was chartered in 1801.

The Secession Convention opened in Columbia on December 17, 1860. General Sherman marched into the city on February 16, 1865, and when he left, the city was burned into memory. During the reconstruction the city recovered quickly and the continued growth is evident today.
